APIDO’s first project in 2012 involved setting up six treatment sites in Health Centres across Wolayita, Gamo Gofa and Dawro. In this first year, we also set up our first shoe workshop – employing and training young locals to make custom, over-sized shoes for Podo patients.

NEW MODEL
Introduced in January 2017
Transforming a nation
Training them to identify, treat and care for Podo sufferers
to support sufferers with treatment kits and monitoring on-going work
In January 2017, we implemented a new model, knowing that in order to transform a nation, the original model was no longer sufficient.
We now directly train health care professionals in Health Centres and Health Extension Workers to identify, treat and care for Podo sufferers.
We also supply treatment kits and support / monitor the on-going work. We are presently working with staff in all 23 of the Health Centres across the 6 Districts in the Dawuro zone.

APIDO is also opening a further six shoe workshops (one per District) to supply the huge need for custom, over-sized shoes for Podo sufferers.
This pioneering new model, while presenting unique new challenges, is now proving to be extremely successful – with the burden of care now placed upon Government Health workers… where it should be.
We believe that this new model, pioneered in Dawuro, can be rolled out across the nation of Ethiopia, meeting the needs of hundreds of thousands more sufferers.
